Teaching is a hard job. It just is. But there are things we can do to support ourselves as teachers that go beyond our classroom practice. Self-care is a buzzword these days and so it’s pretty well known and understood that we have to take care of ourselves if we want to take care of others (and as teachers we do take care of others). Some of the most significant reasons I’ve seen teachers quit or switch professions are because they’re tired, sick, and stressed. While there’s no silver bullet for these things, the good news is, there is TEA, which teachers should be drinking more of, and here’s why:
TEA CAN HELP YOU WAKE UP
Are you tired from staying up until 1 AM grading papers but feel shaky when you drink coffee? Meet tea! Coffee’s less intense friend with bountiful healing properties! While both tea and coffee are stimulants (aka they give you a feeling of being energized), coffee tends to end with a depressed effect, leaving you with less energy, while tea keeps you going without the crash. Also, you don’t have to wait in line at the school keurig anymore! What will you do with all of your free time? The options are truly endless.
TEA CAN HELP PREVENT SICKNESS
Literally, tea heals everything. It has antioxidants. It helps protect your bones. Tea is antibacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-inflammatory. Tea may help prevent cancer. It soothes the digestive system. It keeps you hydrated. Last, and most important in my book, it boosts immunity, which means it helps your body fight off sickness. Find me a teacher who hasn’t been sneezed on by one of their students. I’LL WAIT.
TEA CAN HELP YOU RELAX
Having trouble winding down from a long school day and getting into home or weekend mode but not sure what to do? Drink some dang tea. Some types of tea (hi peppermint!) are straight up muscle relaxants. Tea can reduce stress and anxiety. It can help treat insomnia. It relaxes the body without making you feel sleepy. And the good news is you don’t need a doctor to prescribe it – it’s cheap and available in basically any grocery store! Just add hot water!
